'Tall, idealistic, fierce, scary, sad, loud, playful, our father belonged to us, but mostly to the teenagers he taught. He rocked a sharp haircut and a safari suit. From him I learned how to argue, to lose and play to win, chop wood, handle a hammer, kick a football, follow a plan and put up a tent. He wanted a kinder, fairer world and he taught me to care.'
