the worn by Michele Elliot

the worn  2021

gifted cloth dyed with donated and saved funeral flowers, pumice, soap, linen thread, mapping pins

This work heeds my brother’s hand, 2020, made just after and in response to the summer of fire. Other than the cloth, a disintegrating cotton curtain backing, the materials were gathered on and close to my brother's home in Lake Conjola.

I can’t help but think we are still being asked to pay attention to the fragile state of things surrounding us. Making with what is at hand, with ritual and transformation of the everyday, through the element of water.

I wrote an article about this work for  🌸 garland magazine   Issue #23 Regeneration: A partnership between past and future.
